I have been working with people in therapeutic contexts for over a decade. I began in the field of addictions at an in-patient treatment facility specializing in the application of a biopsychosocial approach to treatment that addressed the root causes of compulsive and harmful behaviours. There I gained experience in the facilitation of group therapy using a variety of modalities. I have also worked in child welfare with families in various stages of intervention and experiencing a wide array of challenges, including child abuse/neglect, domestic abuse, substance abuse, mental health issues and developmental disabilities. I completed practicum training in social work assessment and therapy in the field of forensic mental health where I practiced individual DBT skills-based counselling.

I have never encountered anyone whose choices, thoughts and behaviours I could dismiss on the basis that they were simply a bad person. It has been proven to me repeatedly that people do their best with the knowledge and abilities they have. When we improve self-awareness we empower people to think and act in a way that is true to themselves and their values.

I provide non-judgmental, empathetic grounds upon which trust is built and respect thrives. I believe that these are the fundamentals of constructive counselling. Facing a situation in which you cannot see a viable way out does not mean that you have failed. Accepting the need for an outside perspective, someone to listen, someone to help you examine and assess the situation and create manageable goals is worthy of praise.
